What do NAPHSIS members do?

Vital records and health statistics offices have a critical role in both public health and identity protection. Their core responsibilities include:

Collecting, registering, and maintaining vital events within their jurisdiction, which may include birth, death, fetal death, marriage and divorce records.

Operating secure, state-managed registration systems to ensure the timely and accurate capture of vital event data in compliance with state statutes and regulations.

Issuing certified copies of vital events to constituents through processes designed to safeguard against identity theft and fraud.

Exchanging records across jurisdictional borders to account for people who are born in one state, live in another, and may die in a third, as well as to monitor resident health.

This work is foundational to national health security. Each jurisdiction contributes to a larger, unified dataset through trusted, reciprocal partnerships. This interjurisdictional exchange ensures the accuracy of both public health statistics and legal identity records nationwide.
