Gretchen Van Wye, PhD, MA, serves as the Deputy Director of the Center for Population Health Data Science at the New York City Department of Health an Mental Hygiene, as the agency's Chief Epidemiologist, and as Assistant Commissioner of the Bureau of Vital Statistics. The Bureau of Vital Statistics (BVS) registers all births, deaths, and terminations of pregnancy that occur in NYC and ensure timely and complete data quality, analysis, and reporting for these events. Gretchen has served in several roles with the agency since 2005. Most recently, she has served as the Acting Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Epidemiology, where she co-led the agency's Data Modernization Initiative and the agency's burgeoning AI strategy. Gretchen is an adjunct associate professor at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, where she teaches and supports student research in health literacy, obesity, and vital records and statistics. She received her PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from Yale university, her MA in Health Communication from the University of Georgia, and her B.A. from the Pennsylvania State University.
