New life expectancy & USALEEP data releases

Census tract-level life expectancy estimates are available for the first time in Maine and Wisconsin. These estimates are available in the updated United States Small-Area Life Expectancy Estimates Project (USALEEP) report and by download at the NCHS Site:

  • In Maine, the highest life expectancy at birth is 89.7 years and the lowest is 68.2 years. The state-level estimate for life expectancy at birth is 79.0 years, above current national estimates of 78.7 years.

  • In Wisconsin, the highest life expectancy at birth 89 years, and the lowest is 65.9 years. The state-level estimate for life expectancy at birth is 79.6 years, slightly surpassing current national estimates of 78.7 years.

A new interactive map was also released that allows users to explore life expectancy data from their neighborhood to the national level. These new data products—released by USALEEP, a joint effort among NAPHSIS, NCHS, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF)—show how people living just a few neighborhoods apart may have vastly different opportunities for a long life.

RWJF’s data interactive has also been updated, allowing users to look up the life expectancy estimate for their neighborhood and direct them to resources that can help them work with others in their community to provide opportunities so everyone has the ability to live a long, healthy life.

We’re helping to share these exciting new resources and hope you will help support them, too! Here’s how:

  • Spread the word! We’ve created a communications toolkit to make promotion easy. The toolkit includes social media posts and graphics, newsletter language, and resources, such as a one-pager and key messages, to help communicate about the life expectancy estimates, data interactive and new map with your constituents, members, email subscribers, and social networks. The toolkit is available at: http://usaleep.nptoolkit.org/

  • Share the life expectancy data interactive tools! It takes less than one minute to use the interactive: go to https://rwjf.org/lifeexpectancy to look up your neighborhood’s life expectancy, and then share the interactive via Twitter and Facebook.
